Biography
Steven Van Droogenbroeck is a mandate assistant at the Microbiology Research Group (VUB), where he teaches several laboratory practicals.
During his bachelor’s and master’s studies, Steven discovered the potential of synthetic biology to engineer microorganisms and use them as tools for specific purposes. Fascinated by microbiology and the countless applications it has to offer; he became particularly interested in whole-cell biosensors and their potential for environmental monitoring.
His current PhD research focuses on engineering heavy-metal responsive biosensors for monitoring heavy-metal pollution. His research aims to translate biosensor research into practical applications and to develop accessible monitoring and bioremediation tools to help combat environmental heavy-metal pollution.
